NM Repeal’s 2010 Legislation

~ Still Putting Victims’ Families First ~

 

In 2009, the Catastrophic Crime and Family Restitution Program replaced the death penalty with true life without parole and in 2010 we will add an additional step for the families of murder victims – time off to attend court proceedings regarding their lost loved one.

 

Crime Victim Employment Leave – Summary of Bill

 

¨     Establishes the right of a murder victims’ family member to obtain leave from work to attend judicial proceedings, as well as meetings with prosecutors and defense attorneys

 

o    For companies with four or more employees

o    Leave may be paid or unpaid

 

¨     Working closely with murder victims’ family members allows for a more thorough preparation of criminal cases by judicial system

 

There is wide support in the New Mexico State Legislature for the

Crime Victim Employment Leave bill!

o    Passed House of Representatives, 64-2

o    Passed SCORC, 5-1

¨     In 2007

o    Passed House of Representatives, 66-0

o    Passed SPAC, 8-0

¨     In 2005

o    Passed HLC, 7-0

o    Passed HJC, 8-0
